Overview
eMAR is a medication administration solution designed to improve patient safety while reducing the time required for documentation. It allows clinicians to easily record medication administrations, vital signs, and other observations, while also providing alerts when clinical actions are needed. These alerts are displayed visually within the system, ensuring timely and accurate decision-making.
Additionally, hospitals using eMAR have reported a 33% reduction in medication administration errors and a 45% decrease in documentation time. In addition to improving safety and efficiency, eMAR streamlines the prescribing process for both patients and physicians while ensuring compliance with federal regulations.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Navigating to eMAR
There are several ways to access eMAR in PIMSY, depending on whether you want to view client-specific details or a global list:
- Medical tab of the Client Chart allows for client-specific access
- eMAR Dashboard tile – global listing
For this article we will be looking at eMAR in the Medical tab of the client chart. From the top navigation menu, go to:
Clients > Client Management
Select a client from the list and go to the Medical tab. From the Medical tab, click the Medical Details / Assessment button. From the Medical Details / Assessment screen, click the eMAR tab.
Step 2: Making Edits to a Medication Administration Record
To view a scheduled medication, click the Edit button in the row of the medication you are looking at. This will pull up the Medication Administration Record, which will include information such as:
- Medication
- Dosage & Notes
- Route of Administration
- Site
- PRN
- Dosing in Window (in Minutes)
- Status

When done viewing or making edits, click Save. If your site documents container / inventory management, then a Container / Inventory Log Entry popup will appear.
Step 3: Creating New Medication Administration Record
Click the New Record button at the top. The Medication Administration Record will appear, similar to when editing a record in the previous step.
Complete all relevant fields, assign med containers if applicable, set up recurrences if needed, and then be sure to Save the new record.
There are options at the top that include:
- Delete - Delete the record
- Note - Create a note from the record
- Chart - Access the client chart

Step 4: Utilizing the Global eMAR Screen
If your site has dosing set to automatically create eMAR entries, you will find them here. Additionally, administrators may find it more efficient to utilize the global eMAR screen. To do this, navigate to the global eMAR screen.
Filtering allows you to specify what results you wish to see, such as all eMARs scheduled for a specific date, or specific medication. You may also edit entries, create new, as well as create reports by clicking the appropriate buttons.
