Overview
E-Prescribing with Digital Rx allows prescribers to electronically send accurate, clear, and error-free prescriptions directly to a pharmacy from the point of care, helping improve both safety and the overall quality of patient care.
Required Permissions and Prerequisites

- Please assign the Create, Modify, View, and Delete permissions for the following rule(s):
- eRX Open DigitalRX
- eRX-Create ePrescription Client
- eRX-Create ePrescription Prescriber
- eRX-Create ePrescription User
- Settings:
- -199 ePRESCRIPTION - Years of Active Medications
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Setting Up Users for DRx ePrescribe
Before you being setting up users, ensure your Default Location in Organization Management has a complete address and phone number. Also ensure that the user you intend to set up for ePrescribing has a complete address, phone number, NPI number, and DEA number.
From the top navigation menu, go to:
Administration > User Personnel Folder > User Details
Select a user and go to the Q&A tab within their profile. From the dropdown, select User Misc. Q & A and scroll down to the RX-Profile Type (Only Choose 1) question. Select the appropriate option that identifies their licensure from the list and then click Save.
Exit out of all screens in PIMSY and click Refresh Pick Lists in the Utilities menu. Return to the User Personnel Folder where you should now see a green eRX Register button for DRx on the User Details tab.
Once the user has been successfully registered, the button will turn orange.
Step 2: Registering Clients for DRx ePrescribe
Next we will set up a client for DRx. From the top navigation menu, go to:
Clients > Client Management
To register a client for eRX, open their client chart and confirm that a complete phone number and address are entered. Then, click the green eRX Register button in the top right corner, and follow the prompts. Once registration is completed, the button will turn orange.
This button can also be accessed from multiple areas, including the:
- The Medical section of the client chart
- The Medical tab
- The Medications tab within a note
Step 3: ePrescribing in DRx
To begin prescribing, click the eRx Prescribe button from one of the places mentioned above, and the Digital Rx screen will appear.
From the Digital Rx screen, you can access several key tabs

New Rx Pad
- Create new prescriptions

SS Medication History
- View the Surescripts patient medication history (patient consent required)

Allergies
- View and edit active allergies

Saved Prescriptions
- Access a list of saved prescriptions for the patient

Favorite Drugs
- View and edit personal or practice-wide favorite drugs

Medications History
- Review the patient’s full medication history
- Review the patient’s full medication history
To begin prescribing go to the New Rx Pad tab:
- Type the medication name in the Drug Name search field and click the magnifying glass icon to search
- Double-click the correct medication from the list to add it
- Complete any remaining required fields (if not auto-filled)
- Select the appropriate Diagnosis from the dropdown
- Choose a Pharmacy from the dropdown, or click the magnifying glass to search for one
- Review all entered information carefully
- Click Confirm Prescriptions at the bottom to finalize the prescription
After creating a prescription, the next screen will display a summary of the prescription, including:
- Allergy and drug interaction alerts
- Patient education details
You will also see the following options:
- Remove – Delete the prescription
- Save – Save the prescription for later
- Print – Print a copy of the prescription
- Send & Print – Send the prescription to the pharmacy and print a copy
- + Add to Medication History – Add the prescription to the client’s Medication History
- Send to Pharmacy – Send the prescription directly to the pharmacy
To complete the prescription, click Save. When you are ready for the rx to be filled, click Send to Pharmacy.
Once you are finished prescribing in Digital Rx, click the Exit button at the top.
