Before you can begin prescribing in DrFirst, the prescriber will need to be set up first.
From the top navigation menu, go to:
Administration > User Management > User Personnel Folder
Select the user that will require prescribing access and ensure that they have the following:
An NPI #
A DEA #
Assigned the appropriate profile for prescribing (for example: Doctor/Nurse Practitioner)
Step 2: Client Registration
Now, let's set up a client for eprescribing:
From the top navigation menu, go to:
Client > Client Management
Make sure a complete address has been entered into the basic information section of their client chart
Next, click green eRX Register button in the Details tab of the client chart if the client hasn't already been registered. The button can also be found in other areas such as:
- Medical section in the Client Chart
- Medical tab in the Client Chart
- The Medications tab within a note
After clicking the eRX Register button, a confirmation prompt will appear. Select Yes to proceed.
You will receive a notification upon successful registration.
Click the eRx Register button again and a message popup will appear asking if you wish to add or update the client information. Click Yes to continue.
Step 3: Rcopia Patient Summary Screen
From any of the areas listed in Step 2, click the orange eRX Prescribe button. This will open your web browser and take you to the Rcopia/DrFirst e-prescribing window.
The Patient Summary screen displays key client information including demographics (imported from the client's chart in PIMSY), preferred pharmacy, active medications, allergies, diagnoses, and any pending prescriptions.
*Note: Updates to demographics and diagnoses must be made within PIMSY, while changes to medications and allergies should be made directly in DrFirst.
Under the Patient section, for each client record you can add up to five different pharmacies.
Step 4: Medications Section and Prescribing
Under the Medications section, there are two options to add a medication (be sure to select yes for patient consent):
Show Medication History button
Click the Show Medication History button to retrieve up to two years of past prescriptions. Check the boxes next to the medications you want to add, then select Add to Active Medications.
Manual Entry
Click the Add Medication button to search for a medication manually. Use the search bar to find a specific drug and select the appropriate strength.
Click the + icon next to the preferred medication dosage to add it to the list of active medications.
There are three options for prescribing in Rcopia/DrFirst:
-
Prescribe from the active medications list using the Rx (Prescribe) icon
-
Prescribe via the Favorites (star) icon at the top of the page
- Manually create an prescription via the Create New Rx button at the top of the page
- Search for the desired medication, enter the prescription details, and then click Review to proceed.
On the Review Prescription screen there are two options for saving the Rx:
- Save Pending Rx saves the prescription to the pending queue and returns you to the Patient Summary screen.
- Save and Add Rx saves the prescription to the pending queue and restarts the workflow, allowing you to write another prescription.
Step 5: Prescription Management Section
Use the Prescription Management section on the Patient Summary screen to send prescriptions to the pharmacy.
For all prescriptions, you may be prompted to enter your Signature Password, which serves as a digital signature for processing.
Click Send to electronically submit the prescription.
For EPCS providers (controlled substances), two additional DEA-required steps must be completed to send the prescription electronically:
- Enter the passphrase you created during DrFirst onboarding
- Input the one-time PIN generated by your registered token device
Additional Information
Once registered, the client's medications and allergies become read-only in PIMSY. To make any changes, use eRXPrescribe.
